My Story
You’ve reached Bill of Writes, and this is Jennifer Bill 2.0. I have been an award-winning published journalist for more than 20 years with an innate devotion to the written word. Previously, those words were typically swathed in newsprint, but now my words can be found just a click away. As content writing and 280-character nuggets, blogging, vlogging and shmlogging continue to encapsulate the writing demands of today, this one-time print journalist turned multidimensional digital writer, content creator and social media strategist is here to help YOU.
On the regular, I feel euphoric when I come up with a killer headline. I tinker joyfully with tone. I love playing with words and sentence structure. I thrive on the stress that came with the newsroom and relish in meeting tough deadlines. My quest for perfect prose is most probably insatiable.
Things have changed in my professional world, with the powerful evolution of online journalism, and the saddening devolution of newsroom jobs. For years I braved the effects of declining revenues and multiple layoffs until I knew it was time to head out on my own.

So, welcome to Bill of Writes. You are here because you know that everyone needs a hand at writing and editing. I have an exceptional blend of academic training from Ryerson University’s journalism school and front-line experience working in newspapers, magazines and websites. Several times over I have been a reporter, a proofreader, an editor, a page designer, a Canada-wide section editor (National Life Editor for Sun Media), the second-in-command editor at an American paper (the Pulitzer Prize-winning Rutland Herald, Vermont’s second largest daily), a managing editor, an editor in chief, a reporter for The Economist covering severely boring press conferences in Shanghai and writer/editor for resumes, cover letters, high-priority emails, social posts, essays, wedding speeches, eulogies — you name it.
For those here looking for help, I will help you sound the way you hope to sound. Please get in touch.
Some industry recognition: A National Newspaper Award nomination and a Canadian Online Publishing Award for top social media for the Toronto Star's 10-month-project, Big Ideas, many articles of which you can find here. I'd be remiss if I didn't include my very first award for breaking a front-page-worthy story for the Toronto Sun on puppy mills, given to me by the Ontario SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
Through it all, live music and travel make my world go ’round, and I have written frequently about both topics. Some life highlights: backpacking trips through Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and Australia; a year in China teaching English, writing and exploring; two years in Vermont; and countless concerts and music festivals. I also hold dear my certificate for Mandarin Chinese language studies ... and will never tire of watching jaws drop while I converse with the staff when ordering my food in Chinatown.
